City Water System Eliminates Sand Problems with Lakos Separators

The City of Phoenix, Arizona has found it desirable to equip most of their water wells which pump directly to the water distribution grid with centrifugal sand separators. The use of sand separators extends the life of water meters and has reduced operating costs associated with meter repair and replacement. Just as important as protecting the City’s equipment, local industries such as major cosmetic and electronic factories simply must have near particle-free water for their production facilities. Of course, keeping the sand out also pleases the thousands of people in Phoenix who rely on well water for domestic use. “It’s good PR,” says one spokesman. The City now has 16 Lakos Separators in service with the first installation in July 1969, still in use today. They have been found easy to install and the only maintenance required is purging the collection chamber periodically.

It’s interesting to note that after the City purchased one large private water company, extensive sand problems were experienced in this service area. Investigation revealed the existing sand removal equipment was inadequate and replacement with new sand separators has corrected this previous problem.

“To keep Phoenix supplied with as much as 340 million gallons of water each day requires reliable equipment,” says one spokesman. “It’s good to know we can depend on Lakos Separators to keep the sand out of our water system. Keeping our water lines and plumbing free of sand helps our system work as it should.”
