Residential Separator Installation Guide

The LAKOS residential separators remove sand and sediment before they reach your pressure tank and household plumbing. Proper placement, piping, purge setup, and monitoring ensure the unit operates within its recommended flow range and protects your system from abrasive damage.

Where to Install:

  • Install the Separator between the pump and the pressure tank
  • If an above-ground check valve is present, install it between the pump and the separator to prevent backflow
  • Any tees or diversions (e.g., sprinklers) must be placed after the separator outlet so those lines are protected from sand

Installation Guidelines:

  • Orientation: Install the separator upright
  • Connections: Ensure inlet, outlet, and purge connections are clean and ready for piping
  • Gauges: Install pressure gauges at both inlet and outlet to aid troubleshooting and performance checks
  • Support: Support the separator independently of the piping; a LAKOS Mounting Bracket Kit is recommended to secure the unit

Purge System Setup:

  • Manual isolation valve: Place directly below the separator and before any elbows or turns in the purge piping. This allows using the manual valve as a temporary purge and isolates the automatic valve for service
  • Automatic purge valve: Install no more than 24 inches downstream from the manual isolation valve to ensure reliable automatic purging and easy servicing
  • Purge piping: Keep purge piping runs as straight and short as practical to promote effective discharge of accumulated sand

Monitoring After Start‑Up:

  • Pressurize the system by running the pump and observe both inlet and outlet gauges
  • Confirm the separator is operating within its intended flow range and is actively removing sand by monitoring pressure behavior, purge cycle activity, and visual purge discharge when initiated
  • Troubleshoot any persistent high differential, leaks, or lack of purge activity—check piping, valve positions, gauge function, and mounting
